Intellectual Disabilities
Intellectual disabilities are characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior, which covers many everyday social and practical skills. This disability originates before the age of 18. One criterion to measure intellectual functioning is an IQ test. Generally, an IQ test score of around 70 or as high as 75 indicates a limitation in intellectual functioning.
Developmental Delays
Development is the biological and behavioral growth and change that occurs during a lifetime. Understanding and observing a child’s development is important for detecting possible challenges or delays. Developmental disabilities are most often diagnosed as a result of concerns family members have about their child’s development. Getting early assessment and intervention for developmental disabilities is important for helping individuals develop to their full potential.
